How to Audit Your Supplement Stack

Supplements are full of promises. Better sleep. More energy. Faster recovery. Sharper focus.
But how do you know whether the supplement you’re considering is actually worth a place in your routine?
To figure that out, you need to know what to look for. This guide will walk you through the ingredients, doses, forms, testing standards, and sourcing details that can help you evaluate the quality of a supplement before you buy it.
You can use this approach to evaluate any supplement you’re considering and make more informed decisions about what deserves a place in your stack
An ingredient can be backed by decades of research and still fall short in a formula. Research supports specific doses, not just familiar names.
Look at the Supplement Facts panel. Check the serving size, then find the amount of each active ingredient per serving. Compare it with the doses used in credible human research for the intended benefit. A proven ingredient at an unproven dose is likely not worth taking.
More isn’t automatically better. The right amount depends on the ingredient, the intended use, and the person taking it. What matters is that the dose has a clear rationale grounded in relevant evidence.
Be wary of proprietary blends. They’ll often tell you the total weight of several ingredients without telling you how much of each one is included. If you can’t see the dose, you can’t fully evaluate the formula.
The ingredient name on the front of the bottle might not tell you exactly what’s inside. Many nutrients come in multiple forms, and those differences can affect how an ingredient is absorbed, tolerated, and used by the body.
Look for the specific form on the Supplement Facts panel, often listed in parentheses after the ingredient name. Then look for the reason it was chosen. The form should be supported by research, aligned with the intended benefit, and included at a dose backed by evidence.
Magnesium is a good example. Magnesium bisglycinate, citrate, oxide, and L-threonate all provide magnesium, but they aren’t interchangeable. Different forms may be absorbed differently, affect digestion differently, or be selected for different purposes. There isn’t one best form. The right one depends on the intended outcome and the evidence behind it.
Momentous Magnesium Bisglycinate uses magnesium chelated to glycine, a form selected for absorption and digestive tolerance. “Magnesium” tells you the category. “Magnesium bisglycinate” tells you what you’re actually taking.
Active ingredients get top billing, but they’re not the whole formula. Keep reading past the Supplement Facts panel to the “Other Ingredients” list.
You might find a capsule shell, flavoring, sweeteners, stabilizers, or ingredients that help a powder mix properly. Their presence isn’t an automatic red flag. But every ingredient should earn its place. Look for a clear purpose and a brand willing to explain it.
This is also where your individual needs come into play. Check for allergens, ingredients you don’t tolerate well, and additions that don’t align with what you want from the product. A shorter list isn’t always better. A transparent one is.
Then look beyond the label. The best brands can tell you where their key ingredients come from, why those sources were selected, and how quality is maintained from raw material to finished product.
Sourcing determines where Momentous ingredients come from, how they’re made, and which partners we trust to produce them. We look for partners who can meet our specs consistently and show us how the ingredient is made. Our whey, for example, comes from grass-fed Irish dairy farmers and is traceable from field to finished product. The goal isn’t to use what’s easiest to find, but to find what’s better.
An impressive ingredient list tells you what a brand intended to make. Finished-product testing tells you what it actually made.
For sports supplements, NSF Certified for Sport® and Informed Sport™ set the bar. NSF verifies that the finished product matches its label, screens for contaminants, and tests for hundreds of substances banned by major athletic organizations. Informed Sport™ tests every batch for more than 285 prohibited substances before it’s released to market.
That rigor matters most to tested athletes, but it should matter to anyone taking a supplement. A label is still a claim until independent testing backs it up.
Every Momentous product is NSF Certified for Sport® or Informed Sport™ certified. If a production run falls short, we trash it. In the last 12 months, five production lots failed NSF testing. We destroyed them.
Auditing your stack is about knowing whether a product can support the claims it makes. Good marketing might grab your attention, but clear evidence is what earns your trust.
Before buying, make sure the brand can explain why each ingredient is there, why it’s included in that form and amount, where it comes from, and how the finished product has been verified.
This is the level of unrelenting scrutiny that drives The Momentous Standard®. Science determines the formula and dose. Sourcing determines where ingredients come from and how they’re made. Certification verifies the finished product.
Whether you’re evaluating one of our products or something already in your cabinet, quality should be able to show its work.
