How to Find Protein Powder with the Least Amount of Lead

You've been diligently taking protein powder every day, but recent reports about heavy metal contamination have you wondering if you're doing more harm than good. While it’s understandable to want to reap the many benefits of protein supplementation, you might also have legitimate concerns about lead contamination that’s been found in protein products from some supplement makers.
A recent article published by Consumer Reports found that more than two-thirds of the protein products tested contain more lead in a single serving than is reported to be safe in a day. But don’t panic: while you should always exercise caution around dietary supplements, there’s also a lot more to know.
In this guide, we'll decode third-party testing reports, the truth about protein powders and their lead content, and identify protein powders with the most rigorous testing standards.
Dairy-based protein powders typically test lower for lead because cows naturally filter out many minerals before they reach milk, and whey processing reduces them even further. It’s a biological difference, not a manufacturing flaw.
Plant-based protein powders (like pea protein, rice, or hemp) often show a higher level of heavy metals because plants naturally pull trace minerals from soil and water. These minerals are present in all plant foods and can even be higher in organic crops.
Flavors also matter: cocoa-based powders (like chocolate) naturally contain more trace minerals, so chocolate protein powders (and especially a plant-based option) will almost always test higher than a vanilla whey protein.
Trace minerals are a normal part of agriculture and will always factor into the ingredients in our food. For example, some studies have shown:
Tomato (one medium, ~150g) — ~3.2 mcg

Apple (one medium, ~180g) — ~1.0 mcg

Strawberries (8–10 pieces, ~100g) — ~1.0–1.5 mcg

The trace levels found in Momentous protein powders are comparable to those found naturally in fruits and vegetables—everyday food products recognized as safe and nutritious.
There’s no single universal standard for how much lead is “safe” in protein shakes. California’s Proposition 65 uses one of the strictest thresholds (0.5 micrograms of lead per daily serving), but this is a legal warning level, not a scientific safety limit.
There is not an FDA (Food and Drug Administration) reference intake level around consumption of lead or a specific benchmark for protein powders. The average adult already gets about 1–2 mcg of lead each day from normal foods. In that context, a protein powder’s contribution should be minimal and not meaningfully increase daily lead exposure.
If you want a protein powder with the lowest amounts of lead, the most important thing you can do is choose brands that third-party test every batch and publish their results. Without transparent testing, there’s no way to verify what’s actually in your tub, no matter how clean the label looks.
All Momentous products go through rigorous, accredited third-party testing, and you can view batch-specific results any time. For example, our Whey Protein Isolate has publicly available heavy-metal testing results on the product page.
When evaluating protein powders and avoiding high levels of lead (whether plant-based products or whey), look for brands that provide:
Testing by accredited labs (ideally ISO/IEC 17025 certified)
Recent, batch-specific results, not outdated PDFs
Testing for multiple heavy metals, including lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury
This level of transparency is rare, but it’s exactly what ensures you’re getting a clean, trustworthy product that’s safe for daily use.
Certifications can also help you quickly identify safe, rigorously tested protein powders:
NSF Certified for Sport®
Tests for 270+ substances (including heavy metals), requires batch testing, and conducts unannounced facility inspections to ensure ongoing safety and purity. It has become the gold standard in elite sport and is the only third-party certification trusted by USADA, Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey League (NHL).
Informed Choice/Informed Sport
Requires monthly testing in accredited labs and includes blind retail sampling to verify products match what’s on the label.
USP Verified
Focuses on purity and potency and includes strict Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) audits.
An important note: These certifications do increase production costs, so products carrying these certifications may be slightly more expensive, but remember you’re paying for verified safety, quality, and peace of mind, not empty marketing claims.
From day one, we’ve built Momentous on three principles: quality, transparency, and efficacy. Every product we create starts with validated science, uses only the highest-quality ingredients, and is certified for purity and label accuracy. It’s how we build trust in an industry too often driven by shortcuts and low standards. It’s what we call the Momentous Standard and it guides everything we do.
We collaborate with the world’s leading experts in performance, nutrition, and science, and we invest 1% of our annual revenue directly into product testing and validation to ensure every formula meets our exacting standards.
We also go beyond what’s required by layering three independent levels of quality assurance and public transparency:
Light Labs Testing on Every Product Page
Each batch’s heavy metal test results are published on our website for full public visibility. Here’s an example for plant protein: Light Labs Plant Protein
Public Certificates of Analysis (COAs)
COAs are published on site, see here.
NSF Certified for Sport
Every Momentous product is tested and certified by NSF, the highest third-party verification in sports nutrition. If a product doesn’t pass, it never makes its way to you and we start again.
This means you always know exactly what’s in the product you’re using—and that we’ve gone further than the rest of the industry to prove safety, purity, and effectiveness.
