Momentous Moments: Tamra Halverson
Momentous Moments is a new series that shines a spotlight on those who push what’s possible—whether they’re lacing up for a race or navigating menopause. Today, we introduce you to Tamra Halverson, a Momentous customer who hiked Mount Kilimanjaro in her early 50s. Read more about Tamra’s inspiring story, her Momentous routine, and more.
Anyone who says life gets less exciting with each passing year hasn’t met Tamra Halverson, a Momentous customer who, at the age of 52, successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. The feat, a seemingly out-of-reach, classic bucket list item, began as a casual admission by a friend who wanted one thing for his 70th birthday: to hike up Africa’s highest peak.
But he didn’t want to do it alone. So, without hesitation, Tamra agreed to join her friend on the days-long hike, which sees around 30,000 hikers annually. The pair, who were eventually joined by his wife and two other friends—all in their late 50s and 60s—and Tamra’s 19-year-old daughter, achieved this birthday wish one year later. “All of us made it—every one of us,” Tamra proudly recounts. “And it was kind of a big deal.”
Although climbing the 19,340 feet up Mount Kilimanjaro requires already being at a physically-active fitness level, Tamra, who admits she wasn’t an avid hiker prior to starting the larger-than-life hike, believes having a strong mindset was the key to the group’s success.
“It's a little bit of a mind trip,” says the Utah resident and software employee, who aims to pursue further education in intraoperative neural monitoring, which helps assess the integrity of neural structures and consciousness during surgical procedures. “It's definitely more mental than it is physical, and making sure that you're taking care of your insides and your outside made a really big difference for all of us.”
Some of the ways Tamra prioritizes her "insides" is through daily meditation, journaling, following a balanced diet, and supplementation. For the latter, she opts for Momentous products, including PR Lotion, L-Glutamine, Omega-3, Vitamin-D, and Magnesium. L-Glutamine, in particular, kept the group going strong through altitude sickness on their Kilimanjaro climb.
While the experience fulfilled her friend’s 70th birthday wish, everyone was left forever changed by the adventure. Tamra now feels more committed than ever to her daily wellness routine, which typically begins around 4.30 or 5 a.m. Her ultimate goal? To do it all, at any age.
"I want to be able to travel as I age and as I get older without aches and groans and problems,” she says. “Even though support and help is wonderful and great, I just want to be able to take care of myself, so my children don't have to.
